Transforming Wooden Bookcases

So after finally sitting down and getting a game plan together on the living room, I decided it was time to kick it into action. First up - tackling the bookshelves.

These guys started out in the dining room, holding some of our wedding china and wedding wine glasses. Fancy, huh? When I redid the dining room, I moved them to the other side of that half-wall and into the living room.

I've been planning on painting those walls in a beautiful, yet-to-be-determined shade of grey, like I showed ya'll in my mood board...

...and decided nothing would look better than crisp, white bookcases to flank that opening in to the dining room.

Into the garage these guys went, where they got a good sanding with my newly-purchased, $34.99, mine all mine Mouse sander (and some 120 grit paper.)

After that, I broke out the Kilz Primer and my trusty foam rollers, and gave them two, thin coats.

Looking better already! I decided since I had tons of spray paint on hand, I would use that.

Love this stuff. Two cans later (with a mask on so I didn't pass out from the fumes) and it was all glossy and white and pretty.

All of it, that is, except for the back board. I couldn't get it to photograph well, but it was very splotchy. I even tried doing another thin coat of spray paint, but it didn't fix the problem.  So, of course, I turned to Pinterest, and found these (originally from here, and here.)

I gave some serious thought to wallpapering the back board, but even with my trusty moodboard in hand, I'm wasn't quite sure about the colors/design I wanted. And that's a project I only want to do once. (See that shelf I didn't take out? That's because it isn't removable. Which would make wallpapering a bit more of a pain than normal.) At the same time, I was really diggin' the contrast between the shelves and the backboard in those two Pins I found. What's a girl to do? And then I had a lightbulb moment. A bit of a Eureka, if you will. I decided to break out my leftover Glidden Antique Silver from the dining room, and paint the back in that color. This way, it totally ties into the dining room and I can still wallpaper it later if I'm feeling frisky.

A quick coat of that (all with the brush - no roller on this one), some heavy lifting and reassembly with the help of the Mister, and....behold.

Bookshelf masterpiece! I moved one inside to get a sense of how it looked flowing into the dining room, and left the other in the garage until after I get the walls painted. (The less furniture to move during paint prep, the happier I am.) So far, I'm diggin' the blue on the backboard, even though it reads a bit lighter on the bookshelf that it does in the dining room. I'm hoping that the grey color on the wall will tie it all together, and if not, I can still break out some wallpaper. Obviously, I haven't done any "styling" yet, since I only have one of them in the house and I dont' want to have to take everything off and move it all around when I get around to painting (which is hopefully going to happen this weekend. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.)

So, here's the updated to-do list:

Paint the walls

Paint the bookcases white
Work out some sort of coffee table solution
Figure out a solution for the trunk (and yes, I've already tried it as a coffee table. Too tall.)
Get some blue curtains
Get some fun lamps
Get a wingback chair
Make newly acquired wingback chair white
Accessorize
Figure out a solution/home for Rocker #1
Figure out a solution/home for Rocker #2

Obviously a small task to check off the list, but a finished task nonetheless. I'll take it!
